Wix vs Squarespace for Small Business (2026): The Real Monthly Bill for Three Kinds of Business

For most small businesses, Wix is the better buy and Squarespace is the better-looking one, and the monthly bill shows exactly where that trade sits. A salon or trainer that takes online bookings pays $29 a month on Wix Core with booking inside the plan, against about $35 on Squarespace Basic plus a separate Acuity subscription. A shop selling online pays $29 on either, as long as it skips Squarespace Basic's 2% sales fee. A trade that only collects quote requests pays $17 on Wix Light or $19 on Squarespace Basic. All prices are US, annual billing, read 9 October 2026, except Acuity's, which come from its August 2026 price list.

So: pick Wix if the site has to book, sell and chase leads from one dashboard at the lowest monthly figure. Pick Squarespace if the site's look is itself part of the sales pitch and a slightly higher bill is acceptable. Skip both for a one-page brochure that will never take a payment; a cheaper option in our best website builder for small business ranking will do that job.

The verdict in one line per business type

Appointment business (salon, trainer, clinic): Wix Core. Booking, payments and the site share one $29 plan; Squarespace needs Acuity on top. Shop selling products online: a tie at $29 between Wix Core and Squarespace Core, decided by design taste, not price. Quote-request trade (plumber, roofer, landscaper): Wix Light at $17, unless the portfolio photos are the sales pitch, in which case Squarespace Basic at $19 earns its extra $2.

Bar chart of the monthly bill on annual billing: salon that takes bookings, Wix Core $29 versus Squarespace Basic $19 plus Acuity Starter $16, or $35; shop that sells online, Wix Core $29 versus Squarespace Core $29; trade taking quote requests, Wix Light $17 versus Squarespace Basic $19.

The plan-for-plan price table (annual vs monthly billing)

Both vendors quote a monthly figure that is charged a year at a time. Wix's US plans page shows yearly prices only, "paid in full", before tax. Squarespace prints both annual and month-to-month rates, and the monthly premium is steep: Basic costs $19 a month billed annually but $25 month to month.

Neither has a free plan worth running a business on. Squarespace offers a 14-day trial with no card; Wix offers a 14-day money-back window on new Premium plans, monthly and yearly alike. Both throw in a first-year domain, but only on annual plans, which is one more reason the annual column is the one that matters.

Booking: Wix Bookings vs Acuity (a separate subscription)

This is the line that decides it for appointment businesses. Wix Bookings installs free on any site, but taking payment for a booking online needs a plan that accepts payments, which starts at Core. When we checked Wix's plan table in August 2026, scheduling was listed at a basic level on Core, a standard level on Business (which added HIPAA-compliant bookings) and not at all on Light.

Squarespace's scheduling product is Acuity Scheduling, and no Squarespace website plan includes it. On Acuity's price list as we last confirmed it in August 2026, Starter was $16 a month on annual billing or $20 monthly for one calendar, Standard $27 ($34) for up to six calendars and Premium $49 ($61) for up to 36; its pricing page would not display prices to our US check in October 2026, so confirm them before you budget. Acuity is a capable, dedicated scheduler with payments through Stripe, Square or PayPal and its own intake forms, so the pairing is a real option rather than a workaround. It is a second bill, a second login and a second renewal date. If you want booking in the same plan as the site, start with Wix Core; our booking builder comparison prices the alternatives too.

Taking money: payment gates and transaction fees

Wix's Light plan lists no payment acceptance at all, so the cheapest Wix plan that can sell anything is Core at $29. Squarespace lets every paid plan sell, but Basic adds a 2% platform fee on physical products and services, on top of card processing. Card processing itself is the same on both at the entry tiers: 2.9% + 30¢ per US standard card through Wix Payments or Squarespace Payments.

Stacked bars of fees on a $100 card sale: Wix Core $3.20; Squarespace Basic $5.20, made of $3.20 processing plus a $2 platform fee; Squarespace Core $3.20; Squarespace Plus $3.00; Squarespace Advanced $2.80.

The arithmetic for a shop is short. On Squarespace, Core costs $10 a month more than Basic and removes the 2% fee, so it pays for itself once product sales pass $500 a month. Above that, Squarespace Core and Wix Core cost the same $29 and take the same 2.9% + 30¢ per card sale. Digital products are different again on Squarespace: Basic takes 7% of each digital sale, Core 5%, Plus 1% and Advanced nothing, so a business selling downloads or memberships should price in Plus or Advanced from the start. If design is the deciding factor for your shop, Squarespace Core is the plan to compare against Wix Core, not Basic.

Leads and follow-up: forms, chat, CRM, email marketing

For a quote-driven trade, the lead tools matter more than the store. Wix includes forms on every paid plan (Light allowed 4 forms of up to 10 fields when we checked in August 2026, Core 10 forms of up to 50), plus an inbox, a contacts list and a free manual live-chat widget on all plans. Its email marketing has a free tier of 200 emails a month. Squarespace includes form blocks, newsletter blocks and a contacts panel on every plan, adds pop-ups and form conversion insights from Core, and has no native live chat; its Email Campaigns product is a separate usage-based add-on.

In practice: Wix gives a lead-collecting trade more on its cheapest plan; Squarespace gives a cleaner contact page that needs a third-party widget if you want chat.

Design and editing: what each makes easy and hard

Squarespace's templates are the reason most people consider it: consistent typography, generous spacing and image-led layouts that are hard to make ugly. The trade-off is fewer places to put things exactly where you want them. Wix's editor lets you place almost anything anywhere, which is freedom for some owners and a mobile-layout chore for others.

One Wix rule catches owners out: you cannot switch the template of an existing Wix site. Wix's own help page says to create a new site instead; your plan, domain, blog posts and business email can move across, but the design, layout and several apps, Bookings and Stores among them, cannot. Choose a Wix template as if it were permanent.

Three worked bills: salon, shop, trade

One-chair salon taking deposits. Wix Core: $29 a month, or $348 a year, with booking and payments in the plan. Squarespace Basic plus Acuity Starter: $19 plus $16 (Acuity's August 2026 price), so $35 a month and $420 a year, both on annual billing. Card processing is extra on both.

Shop selling $2,000 a month of products online. Squarespace Basic would cost $19 plus a $40 platform fee (2% of $2,000), or $59, so Core at $29 is the right Squarespace plan; Wix Core is also $29. Processing on $2,000 of card sales is 2.9% plus 30¢ per order on either.

Roofer collecting quote requests, no online payments. Wix Light: $17 a month. Squarespace Basic: $19. Over a year that is $204 against $228, and both include a free domain for year one on annual billing.

Who should pick which (decision flow)

Decision flow: if clients book appointments online, Wix Core at $29 keeps booking in the plan, while Squarespace plus Acuity is about $35; if not, and you sell products online, either Wix Core or Squarespace Core at $29, skipping Squarespace Basic's 2% fee; if not, and the look is your main selling point, Squarespace Basic at $19; otherwise Wix Light at $17, which takes no payments.

The flow is deliberately short because the price gaps are small. Over a year, the biggest difference in the three worked bills is $72, for the salon. That is less than most owners spend on business cards, so if one editor simply feels right in a trial, that feeling is worth more than the gap. Our full Wix review and Squarespace review go deeper on each.

Honest limitations of both

Wix: the US plans page shows only yearly prices, so month-to-month costs need a trip through checkout; Light cannot take any payment; templates are permanent; and the most flexible editor here is also the easiest one to make messy on a phone. Squarespace: booking is always a second subscription; Basic's 2% product fee and 7% digital fee punish growth on the cheapest plan; there is no native live chat; and the month-to-month rates are well above the annual ones.

Edge cases

Health or therapy practices should look at Wix Business ($39), whose scheduling tier added HIPAA-compliant bookings in our August 2026 check, or at Acuity's top plan; check the current terms before handling client health information. Sellers of digital products pay no platform fee on Wix Core, whose payments fee page lists none, or on Squarespace Advanced; Squarespace's lower tiers take 1% to 7%. Multi-staff salons should compare Acuity Standard (up to six calendars; $27 a month at its August 2026 price) with Wix Business before assuming the entry plans scale. If your business is a local trade first and a website second, our ranking of the best website builder for a local service business weighs both against cheaper options.

Wix vs Squarespace questions, answered at the counter

Is Wix or Squarespace better for a small business?

For most small businesses Wix is the better value: Wix Core at $29 a month includes booking and payments in one plan, and Wix Light at $17 covers a lead-collecting site. Squarespace is the better choice when design is part of the sale, at $19 for Basic or $29 for Core on annual billing (US prices, 9 Oct 2026).

Is Squarespace good for small business?

Yes, especially for businesses that sell on looks: studios, boutiques, venues, photographers. The catches are that booking needs a separate Acuity subscription (Starter was $16 a month at its August 2026 price), Basic charges 2% on product sales, and there is no native live chat.

Is Wix good for small business?

Yes. It has the most features on its cheapest plans of the two, including forms, an inbox and free manual live chat on every plan. Buy Core rather than Light if you will take any payment or paid booking, because Light lists no payment acceptance.

Which is cheaper, Wix or Squarespace?

At the entry level Wix Light ($17) is cheaper than Squarespace Basic ($19) on annual billing. For a business that takes payments the two meet at $29 (Wix Core and Squarespace Core). For bookings, Wix Core at $29 is cheaper than Squarespace Basic plus Acuity at about $35.

Can I switch from Wix to Squarespace later?

Yes, but expect to rebuild. Neither moves a design to the other, and Wix will not even move a design between its own templates. Plan the content you would carry across (text, photos, contacts, blog posts) and keep your domain in your own name so it can follow you.
