About ShopfrontStack
Practitioners, not pageant judges: why we score website builders on cost, launch time, and leads.
ShopfrontStack is written by people who build and run small-business websites for a living — sites for trades, salons, cafes, and the kind of local outfits where the owner answers the phone. We've launched them, paid the renewal invoices, watched which forms get filled in and which get ignored, and switched platforms often enough to know where the exits are blocked. We are not a design agency, and nobody here has a portfolio to defend.
Why cost-and-leads beats design awards
A small business website is an employee. It works around the clock, costs $25–40 a month done properly, and has one job: turn a search into a call, a booking, or a quote request. Judged that way, most website-builder reviews measure the wrong things — template galleries and design polish are pleasant, but they're the uniform, not the work. So we score every builder on three tests: what it really costs per month once intro pricing and renewal jumps are counted, how fast its documented setup gets a real site live, and how much lead-capture machinery — forms, bookings, chat, a contacts panel — you get for the money. That method produces our ranking of the best website builder for small business.
How we work
Every price we publish is checked against the builder's own published pricing, with the date noted, and anything we couldn't confirm first-hand is flagged in the copy as an estimate. We spell out the traps vendors leave in the fine print — annual plans charged in full up front, free domains that expire into $20-a-year renewals, intro rates that roughly double at the first anniversary — because that's the part of the bill nobody advertises. Two things you'll never find here: invented case studies (when we describe a salon that takes bookings, it's a worked example, not a client we're claiming), and stopwatch numbers we didn't run — our time-to-launch judgments come from each builder's documented setup flow, not from theatrics.
Independence
Some links on this site are affiliate links: if you click through to a builder and buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those commissions never touch the scores — the rankings are set by the three tests, and the criticism stays in even when a builder is a partner, which is why you'll find renewal-jump warnings in every review on the site. The full policy is in our affiliate disclosure. If we've got a price wrong or a plan has changed, tell us via the contact page — corrections jump the queue.
If you're starting from zero, begin with what a small business website should cost — it's ten minutes that will save you a year of overpaying — then move on to the rankings. And if you only do one thing today, make it the free Google Business Profile. We'd rather you spend nothing than spend badly.
